Mrs. Liz Whidden, Greystone Elementary
15-January-2017 (GSES) - Greystone Elementary School Child Nutrition Program Manager Mrs. Liz Whidden has been selected as a 2017 School Nutrition Hero by the School Nutrition Foundation. Whidden joins only four others nationally to be designated as a School Nutrition Hero for 2017.
The School Nutrition Foundation recognizes extraordinary men and women in the school nutrition profession who make a difference in the lives of school children and go beyond their daily responsibilities in making significant contributions to their communities.
Whidden, who was peer nominated for this award, will be recognized at the fourth annual Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes on Monday, April 3, 2017, during the School Nutrition Association’s Legislative Action Conference (LAC) in Washington, D.C.
The School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) is the sister organization to the School Nutrition Association (SNA) that raises funds to support education and professional development, research to develop best practices, and scholarships for SNA members to continue their educational pursuits.
Over the past 30 years, the Foundation has awarded $2.3 million in scholarships for professional development. In addition, the Foundation administers a Breakfast in the Classroom Program as a partner with three other organizations. The program, which began in 2010, is in its fourth phase and is focused on the school districts in ten states. Funded by the Walmart Foundation, the Breakfast in the Classroom program has awarded grants to school districts to support school districts in beginning and enhancing breakfast program and has increased participation in the school breakfast program.
The School Nutrition Foundation sponsors an annual event during SNA’s Legislative Action Conference (LAC) called the Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes. The event, which raises money for scholarships that the Foundation awards to SNA members, recognizes five School Nutrition Heroes each year. These heroes are those extraordinary women and men who go above and beyond their daily responsibilities and who make a difference in their schools and in their communities. The event, which has become the signature event for the Foundation, began in 2014 in Celebration of the Foundation’s 50th Anniversary. The 2017 Celebration will be the fourth annual celebration of school nutrition heroes.
The heroes are nominated by peers and chosen by SNF to represent the many professionals who have dedicated their lives to serving their schools and their communities.
