December 14, 2017 Greystone Elementary School second grade teacher Mrs. Carol McLaughlin has been named the 2017-2018 Elementary Teacher of the Year for Hoover City Schools.

Her students know her as “Miss Mac” - and she hails from a family of teachers (both parents, a grandmother, three aunts, and an uncle).

McLaughlin proves a digital innovator in and out of the classroom.  She maintains a Twitter presence for her classroom (@missmacowls) and herself (@missmac100).  Embracing social media has helped McLaughlin engage students, differentiate instruction, and connect with parents.  Additionally, McLaughin leverages Twitter to lead the national #2ndChat as a means of connecting teachers and inspiring innovative teaching practices through global projects.

McLaughlin has won numerous awards including PBS Digital Innovator (2016); Air Force Association Chapter 100 Teacher of the Year (2016); and Greystone PTA Teacher of the Year (2015).  She has been teaching at Greystone Elementary since 2005 and held teaching roles in other school systems/states dating back to 1991.

A National Board Certified Teacher, McLaughlin earned a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, along with a Master’s in Elementary Education - all from the University of Alabama.
